About "Wat Mahathat" 

Wat Mahathat : Reconstructed

          Wat Mahathat Situated in the heart of the city ,is the most important temple as the principle temple of Sukhothai. This significant temple comprises the main chedi (stupa) ,assembly halls (vihara) ,mandapa ,an ordination hall (Ubosatha) and 200 subordinate chedis.

          The main chedi has the graceful shape of a lotus bud ,which characterizes the art of Sukhothai. Surrounded by 8 chedis ,the four at the corner belong to the Hariphunchai-Lanna style and the four in between have Phang-shaped chedis ,which were influenced by Khmer art.

         The base of the main chedi is decorated with relief-stucco of 168 Buddhist disciples walking with their hands clasped together in saluration. 

         At both sides of the main chedi is situated with two standing Buddha images called Attharot ,12 meters in height. 

         There is huge bronze Buddha image or golden Buddha image in stone inscription No.1 enshrine in the royal vihara in front of the main chedi. This image was removed to Suthat temple in Bangkok by King Rama1 and it was later named Phra Si Sakkayamunin.

About "Wat Sa Si " 

         Northwest of Wat Mahathat ,this beautiful ancient monument is in the middle of the large reservoir known as Traphang Trakuan.Its important buildings include a round bell-shaped chedi ,an assembly hall (vihara) and an ordination hall (Ubosatha).

         The round stupa serves as historical evidence of the prevalence of Sinhalese Buddhism in Sokhothai.This circula stupa is sometime known as a chedi in the Sri Lankan bell-shaped style. The ordination hall in the middle of the reservoir point to a Buddhist concept of demarcating an area where monks perform religious functions by enclosing the holy precincts with water as a symbol of purity.

          Prior to 1978 A.D.a road name Charot Withi Thong ran through the temple. Fully conscious of the damage and environment problems ,the Fine Arts Department demolished it and build a new one along side the reservoir.

About "Wat Traphang Ngoen" 

           Located 300 m. west of Wat Mahathat, this ancient temple without a boundary wall.It is composted of the main chedi ,an assembly hall(vihara) and an ordination hall (Ubosatha) in the middle of a reservoir.

           The main chedi was build in the shape of the lotus bud with four niches to enshrine standing and walking Buddha images.These receses are a striking feature which makes the chedi of Wat Traphang Ngoen different from pther lotus bud shaped chedis.

           East of the main chedi, an ordination hall was construced on an island in the middle of the reservoir named Traphang Ngeon.The construction of this ordination hall is in accordance with the concept known as Nadi Sima or Udaka Sima which means the enclosure of the precincts of an.

About "Sukhothai Historical Park"

           Sukhothai-Si Satchanalai-Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park was registered as world in 1991 by United Nations Educational ,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the studies and evidenced discovered in this area and in the proximity show the wonderful Thai architecture of the ancient times reflecting the prosperity ,knowledges and history of Thailand.

Go to Destination
           From Bangkok to Sukhothai ,highway no.1 (Paholyotin) Bangkok - Ayuthaya - Angthong - Singburi - Chainat - Uthaithani - Nakorn Sawan.From Nakorn Sawan can take Highway AH1 to Sukhothai through Kamphang Phet (475 km.) or Nakorn Sawan through Phitsanulok to Sukhothai (H1182/478 km.).
