 About  : Wat Thammaram

In the old days, Wat Thammaram served as a campsite for the Burmese each time they came to invade Krung Si Ayutthaya. The spot was a strategic point for Siam during that time because, from there, the troop could took hold of riverways around the city.
Inside Wat Thammaram is located a round-shaped chedi with a square base, which is the main chedi of the temple. The vihan is situated in the east and the ubosot is located on the west behind the main chedi. The scripture hall and the bell tower can be found on the bank of the river to the east of the monk dwelling area.
The two-storey monk dwelling now serves as Hor Tri, or the scripture hall. It is a Thai style building with mural paintings on four sides of the wall telling the story of the Lord Buddha: the meeting of gods, lying down and doing meditation with corpses, and the royal portraits of King Rama V.
The area of the ubosot, the vihan and the chedi is spacious. The vihara has a gable with flower and animal stuccos and the roof that was made from clay tiles. It houses a several images of Buddha made from molded lime. A large Langka-shape chedi, believed by archeologists to be one of the earliest of its kind, is located behind the vihan.
Being well-tended by the temple’s personnel, Wat Thammaram is clean and tidy in all areas. It is also cool and shady with tree and the pleasant atmosphere thanks to its location by the riverside. The temple is indeed a recommended place for merit making, meditation and the practice of dharma.

About  : Wat Niwet Thamprawat Ratworawihan

Wat Niwet Thamprawat Ratworawihan is considered the one and only European architectural style temple in Thailand. In 1876, King Rama V had this temple built in order to perform religious practices during his stay at Bang Pa-in palace. The intriguing characteristic of this monastery is that it was decorated in Western style. The ordination hall (ubosot) resembles a Christian cathedral with steeply sloped Gothic roofs. The window by the main Buddha image was beautified with colorful stained glass portraying the image of King Rama V.

The main Buddha image known as “Phra Buddha Narumol Dhammopas” sits on the plaster base similar to the Cross. On the right of the ordination hall is a shrine where Phra Khanthararat in the posture of requesting rain is kept.

Opposite the shrine of Phra Khanthararat, there is another shrine that houses a seated stone Buddha image on a coiled Naga. It is an ancient Buddha image which ages more than a thousand years and was built during the Lopburi period by a Khmer Craftsman. The Buddha image is adjacent to Phra Sri Maha Bodhi tree whose branches shade the area in front of the ordination hall. There is also a stone garden called “Diskul Anusorn” with a large array of stone collection, such as limestone, sandstone, and conglomerate. It also contains the relics of Prince (Somdet Kromphraya) Damrong Rajanubhab and his mother Chao Chom Manda Chum, King Rama IV’s favorite concubine, as well as other royal-blooded members of Diskul family.

This temple was a royal temple in Ayutthaya Period but no evidence of its building found. Only appeared in royal annals that in the reign of King Phra Thi Nang Suriya in 1760 before the second loss of Ayutthaya, the Burmese set up their military camp here to fire cannons to the capital. In 1767, Ayutthaya was sacked and the temple burned almost to ashes and deserted since then. Its renovations were held 2 times: 1806 in Rattanakosin Period and in the reign of Phra Chunla Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua, His Majesty the King also gave it new name: Wat Wat Kasattrathirat Worawiharn.
Interesting things in the temple are many. The first thing is a group of 4 wiharns: 2 big 2 small. The big ones are in front of the ubosot. Its front is a mondop-topped arch, tympanum a craving of Narayana on Garuda surrounded with Kanok patterns. Inside lie Buddha images in Tawai Netr and Pratan Apai postures; the other big wiharn a craving of Brahm Alumpayana catching Puritat Garuda, inside Buddha images in Samathi posture and the Maitreya.

The ubosot’s walls have clearstories in the shape of vertical bars. Its corbels are wood carving engraved the King of Nagas under both sides of eaves, heads of the pillars Bua Wang, the roof tiled with ancient Gaboo, tympanum engraved intertwined sprays. Its front decorated with house of Busabok Banshorn and its back Muk Dej placing Buddha image in Palilai posture. Inside the ubosot lies the main Buddha image, Phrabuddha Kasattrathirat, a Mara Vichaya Buddha image. Its walls painted with Rattanakosin art. Around the ubosot there are twin Bai Sema made of slate place on mold lotus base.

Besides, there is the main Prang tower behind ubosot and surrounded by squared-based stupa with indented cornered Chedi Rai which are Ayutthata Period’s style.

Wat Thammikarat where the king would visit the temple on Buddhist holy days to listen to the sermon.

Thai | English

 About  : Wat Thammikarat

Wat The temple was then called Wat Mukkharat. According to the Northern Chronicles, this was founded by Phraya Thammikkarat, a son of King Sai Nam Phueng before the Ayutthaya period. Built in the same period as Wat Phanan Choeng, Wat Thammikkarat would be the place for the holy monks at that time to graduate in Buddhist theology as the highest level of Buddhist dhamma and the king would visit the temple on Buddhist holy days to listen to the sermon.
Wat Thammikkarat has been related to many Ayutthayan kings including Prince Uthumphon of Ayutthaya and his royal page named Hong. Both entered the Buddhist priesthood at this temple in the late Ayutthaya period. Hong, the officer of a royal household, later went to war with Phraya Tak and was promoted to General Phraya Phet Phichai.
Upon entering the wiharn compound where the king and his courtiers listened to the sermon, today you will still find a giant bronze head dating back to the U-Thong period. The original is now located at the Chao Sam Phraya Museum.

The most prominent feature in this temple is a central pagoda surrounded by singh (the guardian lion) sculptures. It is a large bell-shaped chedi situated on the octagonal base with a staircase of multiple headed serpents, called naga, on each of the four sides as influenced by the popular Sukhothai art. This beautiful blend of the two periods shows the tight bond between Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. The square circumambulation base decorated with elaborate stucco lions built in the reign of King Prasat Thong.
Both naga and singh were influenced by the ancient Khmer art. Singh, the lion figure, was believed to protect the temple. The naga, the multi-headed serpent, at the railing is the analogy as the holy bridge linking the human world and heaven together.

main wiharn

Behind the singh chedi is located the main wiharn or a massive sermon hall with a total of nine rooms. Built during the reign of King Borommatrailokkanart, the large columns inside this wiharn are still intact. The front hall does not have any windows but has a passage for light to shine through which is the same architecture as the main wiharn of Wat Mongkhon Bophit and the ubosot of Wat Na Pra Men. This unique architecture represents the Ayutthayan art in the middle period.
